LYA-Y-DAVID-003-2.jpg

SUMMER Edition - Lya and David are two big souls, real yoga treasures and dearest kindred spirits of mine.  Now, parents of Pablo, and constantly refining the way they see the world while they keep inspiring their students to do the same. I admire them for their revolutionary vision, for their honesty, for their adventurous characters, for the way they master their passions, for their amazing practices and they way the have explored deeply the way of life through nutrition, mindful movement and yoga studies.

LYA AND DAVID

  1. Tell us 3 things about you guys?
  • We are parents to 2 year old Pablo Marcel
  • We are yogis
  • We are coffee snobs
  1. What is the best advice you have ever been given?

Our most influential teacher, Nevine Michaan, taught a form of yoga that can perhaps be summarized with this quote by William Arthur Ward:

“The pessimist complains about the wind,

the optimist expects it to change;

the realist adjusts the sails”

  1. What is your favourite song?

- DAVID: Crosstown Traffic – Jimi Hendrix

- LYA: Midnight Rider – Patti Smith

  1. Can you tell us a beautiful story about your life?

About 9 years ago when we first got together, while staying over at David’s apartment in Williamsburg Brooklyn, we heard a shuffling sound in the kitchen in the early morning. David jumped out of bed (always on alert while living in a shoddy building in the then, un-cool and somewhat dangerous south side of Williamsburg) and tip toed towards the kitchen. He thought he was dreaming when he saw a tiny turquoise tropical-looking bird perched on a wire which ran across the ceiling into a lamp. It didnt move when it saw David, it just chirped sweetly, and then remained there with us for almost an hour as we went about our morning, making our fresh almond milk and brewing coffee. Eventually, it flew out through the window, and we never saw it again. But we took it as an omen of our love, and we have not been separated since then.

  1. Share with us one of your favourite recipes?

There are so many! But since we just mentioned almond milk in our story, I will share a variation of it:

Golden Almond Milk.

I have made this milk in the past for our friend Hari Khaur, who is a kundalini yoga master. One of the teacher trainings that Hari leads is for stress management using Ayurvedic techniques, which include food therapy, and this is one of the drinks that I’ve made for her students.

GOLDEN ALMOND ‘MILK’

Servings: 4

1 cup of almonds, soaked over night

4 cups of water OR 2 cups of water and 2 cups of raw or gently pasteurized whole milk

1 pinch of salt, preferably Celtic or Himalayan crystal salt

1 Tablespoon of raw local honey or pure maple syrup (optional)

½ teaspoon of cinnamon

½ teaspoon of ground cardamom seeds

¼ teaspoon of ground turmeric

Strain the almonds and discard the soaking water. Rinse the almonds and peel them by pressing each almond between your thumb and index finger. The skin should slip off easily.

Blend the soaked almonds with 4 cups of water or 2 cups of water + 2 cups of milk.

With a fine mesh or a nut milk bag (available at some kitchenware stores), strain the milk and discard the pulp of the almonds (it makes a good facial mask).

Return the ‘milk’ to the blender and add the salt, honey or maple, and spices.

Blend and enjoy as is in the winter, or slightly warmed during cooler months.

Where can we find you?

Both are in the middle of a revamp, but the domain names will remain the same…
