SUMMER Edition - Lia, introduced to me to the presence of God in my life back in India, almost a decade ago. Some souls change the direction of people´s life. She has changed mine and this is more than i can ever imagine possible. New eyes, new vision, complete new 3D perception of the world around me and I will be forever thankful. She is a stunning woman. A presence you will never forget. She brings luminosity to your life. Certainly has done it to mine. She is an amazing artist, researcher of Light and Spirit. Progressive and rebel about the ordinary world. She did her studies at Oxford University and Goldsmiths College in London, where she was also an ORSAS scholar. She has been a visiting artist, lecturer, and critic at numerous institutions, including Tate, Oxford University, Performa, New York University, and Savannah College of Art and Design. Yes, this is my dear Lia. Pure pristine Light you are dear friend.

LIA CHAVEZ

  1. Tell us 3 things about you?

As a multimedia visual and performance artist, I explore the wondrous mysteries of light, form, and the interior cosmos. I'm currently devising a series of works that explore the art material of consciousness, neuroscience, and the phenomenology of light. The body is the central instrument for my creativity, and Yoga, meditation, and other cross-cultural contemplative practices are integral to my process.

  1. What is the best advice you have ever been given?

The dark night of the soul visits people during a process of transformation.

It's part of the healing spectrum.

  1. What is your favourite song?

There are so many, but Clair de Lune by Claude Debussy is pretty great.

  1. Can you tell us a beautiful story about your life?

As a child, I awoke to Debussy's Clair de Lune which played at exactly 7am every day on the local classical radio station. For me, this song evokes the first light of day, which is oddly wonderful since it's a song about the moonlight. To this day, I still wake up to it.

Sonnets of Orpheus by Rainer Maria Rilke (Don Paterson's translation is exquisite)

This mystical masterwork of Rilke's was written in a very short period of time under a spell of commanding inspiration. There's a piece called "The Dancer" in which he describes how a dancer spins in order to find her axis. I draw endless insight and nourishment from the text as a whole, for life and art.
